My favorite podcasts

Podcasting is something I love a lot. I even made one and got into editing and producing them. I hope I can get to a point where I can get back to that. In some ways I have but can’t share yet…

I wanted to share with you some of the podcasts I subscribe to and never not listen to. I often listen to many similar podcasts. You may think that shows with the same topics would be redundant but it’s the hosts and their ideas that make each one unique. If you enjoy reading this blog you might enjoy these too. I tend to listen to more prosumer focused shows than more technical iOS/Swift based shows.

Connected (Releases: Wednesdays)

Hosted by: Myke Hurley, Stephen Hackett, and Federico Viticci Connected is one of my favorite podcasts. They talk about the Apple News of the week and also come up with really fun segments like “The Rickies”. Where each guest makes picks of what Apple will announce before an Apple event and a winner is declared by whose predictions came true.

I love this show because each host has insightful opinions on what Apple is working on. I think the best shows often bring up use cases you don’t see. With Stephen being from Memphis in the U.S., Federico being in Italy, and Myke from England you can see how Apple’s products impact more than U.S. users.

The show has a really cool fun and relaxed feel. Most of the ones I’m gonna list do, but I feel like the best shows have this feeling. They even have a membership for an ad free longer version of the show.

ATP: Accidental Tech Podcast (Releases: Thursdays)

Hosted by: Marco Arment, John Siracusa, and Casey Liss ATP is yet another one of my most loved shows. Talking about the Apple News of the week or not and focusing on other topics. This tech show is one of my favorites because of how you never know what you’re gonna hear. Often times they go off into tangents and tangents of tangents where you just learn interesting nerdy things. They have a huge listenership and have some of the best follow up because of it. They’ve even called this out on one of their recent episodes after hitting a milestone of 500 episodes of the show.

Marco is an audio guru and the developer behind Overcast my podcast app of choice. John Siracusa is a developer of apps like Front and Center and an independent podcaster. Casey Liss is also an independent podcaster and developer behind apps like MaskerAid. They are all very smart and knowledgeable and have interesting perspectives on what Apple is up to. Like Connected they offer an ad free version of the show and an unedited bootleg so you can listen to the show early.

The Talk Show with John Gruber (Releases: Randomly)

The Talk Show is a long one but always worth a listen. John Gruber of Daring Fireball is one of the biggest Apple bloggers. Daring Fireball posts more than just whats going on in the world of Apple. It mainly focuses on what John finds interesting. The Talk Show is an extension of that where he interviews guests he finds interesting. Most times they’re talking about Apple but not always.

The show doesn’t really have a release schedule it just surprises you with a new episode. Sometimes at random times of the day. But you can expect a new episode every few weeks or so. Like ATP there are many tangents but each one is usually pretty interesting. Although if you’re not a fan of sports like me you’ll likely fast forward through those bits.

Mac Power Users (Releases: Sundays)

Mac Power users is hosted by Stephen Hackett & David Sparks. Each week MPU focuses on helping you get the most out of your Mac or Apple devices. Often going deep into apps or topics they get really detailed on how they stay productive and how you can too. They also have guest based episodes which are a lot of fun. Guests often bring up really interesting day to day examples of how they use technology to get their work done. You’ll probably also pick up an app or two that you didn’t know about. For me most recently that was Tabitha recommended by Alex Cox.

Launched (Releases: Seasonaly)

Launched is hosted by Charlie Chapman the developer behind Dark Noise. Launched is a really fun show that Charlie has made showcasing prominent developers in the iOS community. The show does branch out from time to time and includes other guests but one thing is for sure. Charlie will bring you an interesting guest and you’ll likely learn something new. I know lots of shows I have listed are very similar but to me it’s kinda hard to have too many shows like this.

Under the Radar (Releases: Every other Wednesday)

Under the Radar is hosted by Marco Arment & _David Smith. David is the developer behind the amazing Widget Smith app that went viral in 2020, among many other apps he’s done. Marco and David talk about indie life as iOS developers. Sharing how their own apps are coming along and how they navigate being an Apple developer. This is probably the most technical show I listen to but it’s never too technical as to shut out anyone from the show.

In closing

There are still other podcasts I listen to that I haven’t listed here. My Overcast podcast list is long and often filled with shows with one or two episodes. But these are the shows I love and never miss an episode. I love listening to podcasts it’s something you can put on the background and enjoy. Or you can devote your full attention to them and get enjoyment that way too.

Lots of times people have different TV shows they look forward to each week. For me thats how I see my favorite podcasts. While driving to work, doing dishes, or other activities things are just more fun with podcasts. AirPods Pro and an Apple Watch give you pretty great podcasting experience and are usually how I listen. While I don’t have to many friends geographically close to me that are into Apple like I am. These shows help make it feel like I do and its one of my favorite things about them.
